This strategy is based on research, which indicates that students perform better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, yet academically-beneficial activities. Through learning projects, the staff creates enjoyable opportunities for high-yield learning activities that include leisure reading, writing activities, discussions with knowledgeable adults, homework assistance, tutoring and games (such as Scrabble) to develop young people’s cognitive and social skills. Learning projects also emphasize parent involvement and collaboration between MSOC and school professionals as critical factors in creating the best possible after-school learning environment.
